The Sparks is an intro-level design by Rex Hinson for the new E-36 class model, which was first flown at the 2007 Nats as a provisional event. E-36 rules proposed by Vic Nipert were intended to be simple, aimed at utilizing readily available components, providing an inexpensive way to become knowledgeable with the techniques necessary to fly electric powered Free Flight. In 2011 the rules were updated to allow either brushed or brushless motors with gearing and folding props allowed. Nickel or Lithium batteries are allowed in either 2 cell (7.4V Lithium) or 6 cell (7.2V Nickel). Motor run is limited to 15 seconds, with fly-off's shortened to 10 and 5 seconds. Model wingspan shall not exceed 36 inches, with no restriction on area. Minimum flying weight is 120 grams. Sparks was designed to meet these rules, and is intended to provide a platform for the modeler to gain some experience with electric power, while flying a really competitive model. Sparks has a 36" span with 175 sq.in. area. Recommended power is the HC-2208 brushless motor (M-112) with Talon 15 speed control (C-M-111), the E-36 timer (E-36), and a small 2 cell LIPo. Recommend battery source is Hobby King.
