The Super Chief was flown in 1950 and 1951 by George Aldrich in the senior division. Some of the design features like the “airfoil” shaped vertical stab/rudder were later incorporated in his famous Nobler design. The design was said to be a significant improvement over the original VECO Chief kit – which was Hi Johnson’s up-grade of Bob Palmers “Go-Devel Sr” …..U-control models have pedigrees too! Biggest differences between the super Chief and the VECO Chief was that the VECO kit had a thinner airfoil and the tail feathers and flaps were 3/16 sheet. Super Chief has thicker/tapered built up surfaces to match the shape of the airfoil. Super Chief also had a bubble canopy. As today, light weight was a goal with target weight being 30oz for .29 powered models, 26oz for a .19, and 34oz was max for a 35. Covering was colored silk span with a few coats of nitrate dope and a varnish-type fuel proofer. The BMJR prototype kit came in at 33 1/2oz with polyspan covering, colored nitrate and a top coat of Klass-Kote epoxy for fuel proofing. Powered by a BRODAK .40, with APC 11×5 prop, and 5oz Brodak tank BH-552, prototype required 1 oz tail weight for proper CG and a final flying weight of 34 ½ oz.. Wing span is 53" witth an area of 582 sq. in.
